The Part-time Extended Unit
Extended Unit - Albuquerque, NM November 17, 2009 - April 27, 2010
The Extended Unit is a part time 20 week program that will begin November 17, 2009. The education day will be held weekly for the group on Tuesdays at St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, NM. Additionally, 15 clinical hours are required each week. Albuquerque area students will do their clinical work at Presbyterian Hospital. Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico students will do their clinical work at St. Vincent. The extended program yields one unit of CPE credit through ACPE, Inc. The peer group will meet for Orientation for the first few weeks and after commissioning will meet weekly for seminars and group supervision through the end of April. An ACPE application, a Bachelor's Degree (or Master's Degree) and an interview with an admissions subcommittee are required for consideration for admission. Attention is given to developing a CPE group with optimal possibility of learning, for example, with religious diversity. Extended Units are designed for parish ministers, priests, rabbis, religious, other clergy, parish nurses, commissioned lay ministers, and laypersons in ministry.
The focus of the Presbyterian Healthcare Services program curriculum is threefold:
- An intensive participation in pastoral ministry to patients, patients' families and staff in the multi-cultural setting of PHS with the supervision of an ACPE certified chaplain supervisor.
- Intensive collegial participation in an educational peer group.
- Engagement in a reflective learning process with individual and group supervision that assists in the development and integration of personal and professional identity, the enhancement of pastoral skills and the ability to assess the theological, psychological and social implications of one's pastoral functioning.
Pastoral Reflection, Pastoral Formation, and Pastoral Competence are the primary learning goals that guide the learning contract between the student and supervisor.
Basic computer skills are a necessity, as all members of the department participate in regular data collection and entry on the computer.
There is no stipend for this program. The non-refundable application fee is $30.00, and checks may be made to Presbyterian Hospital. Tuition cost for the Extended Program is $350.00 per unit.
